I caught up with one of my most successful students, Laura Johnson, at my recent EDGE event and she shared with us one of her top tips for success in real estate investing:
"One of the most important things I've learned since starting REI is to keep organized. Especially when making calls. I always keep a note pad with me for this purpose. Whenever I call an agent's office, bank, contractor... I write down all the names of the people I speak to, their position, the date I spoke with them and what we spoke about.
When you get busy and talk to a lot of people this becomes a very handy reference. Everyone likes to be remembered, and it takes you through the channels much more quickly. This way, when I call back I can ask for them by name, remind them who I am and when we last spoke, etc. This is a people business, and treating each person you deal with respectfully and showing kindness absolutely makes a huge difference.
You may want to get to the bank person who handles their properties as quickly as possible, but remember the person who answers the phone is just as important. They are the "filter" so to speak that you need to go through to get to anyone else. By acknowledging them and the help they give will open more doors than you can imagine.
I also make a habit of telling people who are extremely helpful that I would like to let their boss know about it, and who should I send a note to? And then I follow through and do it. Trust me - you have just established a working relationship with someone who will look forward to helping you in the future!"
There's a lot of talk about automated real estate systems but Laura reminds us how real estate investing is really a business about connecting people and about being respectful of everyone you meet.
